Beware of Chemical Drain Cleaners

Chemical Drain Cleaners

Chemical drain cleaners come in various forms, including liquid, gel, and powder. They work by taking or giving electrons to the clogging substance, generating heat in the process.

There are three main types of drain cleaners:

Caustic drain cleaners contain substances such as lye and caustic potash.

Oxidizing drain cleaners contain substances such as household bleach, peroxides and nitrates.

Acid drain cleaners aren't commonly found in stores, and some are sold only to plumbers. These typically contain high concentrations of sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid.

POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

•Chemical burns

•Dispensing methods

•Chemical reactions producing heat, gas eruptions, or toxic gases

•Piping/fixture failures

• You need to understand the ingredients that are in chemical drain cleaners to see if they are safe for the pipe material, for example, some chemical drain cleaners can soften PVC pipes and the glue that holds them together or, can cause additional damage to pipes that are already corroded.

• Do not use chemical drain cleaners on a drain that is attached to a garbage disposal, as there can be a splash-back effect next time you turn on the disposal, spraying chemicals into your mouth, eyes, or on your skin.

• Do not use chemical drain cleaner on a drain that is completely blocked, as the cleaner will only cause more problems, leaving you stuck with a chemically treated, hazardous clog for the plumber which could cost you more than the chemical drain cleaner did.

• Do not use chemical drain cleaners if you have a septic tank or a cess-pit as chemical drain cleaners will cause damage to them.

Safer Drain Cleaners

Enzymatic drain cleaners use living organisms to eat the material that’s clogging your drain. They usually work slower than chemical drain cleaners and they often only work on organic materials, but they don’t produce heat and they’re non corrosive.

WARNING

Chemical drain cleaners are potentially dangerous to use. They are reactive with human tissue in a similar manner as to the organic materials in drain blockages. Hazardous and toxic gases may be generated, as well as spattering and/or eruptions.

Recommended preventive care such as avoid pouring grease down drains, using strainers to trap food, hair and other articles, regular biological/enzymatic treatments, and/or pouring hot water down the drain weekly to keep the drain free flowing.

If a drain requires cleaning, consumer advocates recommend the use of mechanical devices, followed by removal and cleaning of traps and cleanout plugs. Chemical cleaners are recommended only as a last resort, if the chemical drain cleaner fails to work, a professional should be contacted and the situation should be explained before any work begins.
